Haunted by dreams of creatures conjured by his culture's mythology and encouraged by the enthusiastic teachings of an overly friendly school teacher, Andrew makes the Hill his retreat. Seeking solace, his trips to the Hill turn into a real-life nightmare as his mentor uses the area's isolation and his student's trust as an opportunity for abuse. A fusion of boyhood innocence, ancient lore, and the harsh reality of adult life, love, and betrayal, this haunting tale of obsession and trauma is at times both heartwarming and achingly sad.

Author Craig Higginson
ISBN 1770090517, 9781770090514
Format Paperback
Pages 287p.

The Fabulist's Bindle is a collection of short stories authored by 2006 SA PEN/Studzinski Literary Award finalist, Mehluli Nxumalo. Mda presents us with the consequences of transgression: that which is seen as polluted and judged to be dangerous to the good health and purity of a group, a society, a culture. Taboos, superstition, customs and moral ethics become the subjects of inquiry and are, at times, subjected to ribald satire. This play cuts into a virtuoso style of theatre that can in no way be confused with the objectives and methods of conventional realism. Mda establishes a unique style and tone that is innovative, entertaining and challenging. It fuses satirical elements derived from classical poetry with a modernist sensibility that synthesises Brechtian and Absurdist features of theatricality, using characters as types and montage. Above all, in this work there is a profound exploration of what it means to operate in the politically charged landscape that defines post-apartheid South Africa with its cultural pluralities and differentials in access to resources and agency. Stylistically adventurous and unafraid to deviate from conventionally accepted norms, Mda is iconoclastic in his handling of the ways in which attitudes to power, superstition, ethics and sex are constructed. The cultural discourse of patriarchy and the 'regime of truths' regarding ideals and taboos defining female sexuality, its obligations, and its custodianship are the focus of this play.

Author Zakes Mda
ISBN 9781868145676
Format Paperback
Pages 105p.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1160/4950/products/preview.rdrj-2206-g160.1.front.1868145670_3F28E019_8fa3f9cc-5ae0-4266-8335-b93461201b5c.jpg?v=1575931648
9781250048721
Flat Water Tuesday, by Ron Irwin

A stunning saga of love, sport, and buried secrets

Rob Carrey is a successful documentary filmmaker who has returned from a shoot to New York City, where he's prepared to separate from Carolyn, his long-time love.
