These historic bird paintings by renowned avian illustrator Claude Finch-Davies were done in the early 1900s, when he was based in the Pondoland area of South Africa's Eastern Cape.
A soldier by profession, Finch-Davies had arrived in SA from England in 1893, and by the time of his death in 1920 had produced almost 1,000 bird paintings from around SA and Namibia.
His paintings have featured in a number of books and ornithological journals, including Major Boyd Horsbrugh's 1912 work, 'The game birds and waterfowl of South Africa'.
Most of his collection is housed in the National Museum of Natural History in Pretoria, with whose permission these cards are published. Heritage Prints has also partnered with Birdlife South Africa, who will direct a portion of the proceeds to their conservation initiatives.
