Bridge Books Barbican invites you to the highly anticipated Afrofuturism Book Fair on May 10th, 2025. This vibrant, one-of-a-kind event will bring together culture, innovation, and learning to create an immersive experience that bridges the past, present, and future. Join us for a day packed with a workshop on writing, author discussions, a walking tour and opportunities to explore the limitless possibilities of Afrofuturism.

Writing Workshop

  • Jarred J. Thompson, multi-award winning author of The Creative Institute for Dying will be facilitating our Writing Workshop. He will be introducing you to the art of writing speculative fiction and creating worlds through an interactive lesson that will ignite your creativity. 


Walking Tour

  • Journey through time as we explore the city’s rich past and dynamic present, blending our history and our future in a way so inventive you’re bound to see the infinite possibilities of your surroundings. 


Writing the Future: A Panel Discussion on Writers as Diviners

  • Engage with award-winning authors, writers and industry professionals on how writers creating worlds and circumstances in speculative fiction, science fiction and fantasy is testament to their duties as culture-makers.
  • Siya KhumaloOhene Yaw Ampofo-Anti, and Esinako Ndabeni, to name a few, will be in conversation.


Umhabulasihlungu - Dramatised reading/performance by Cullen Mackenzie

  • To close the day, experience the electrifying performance by writer and linguist, Cullen Mackenzie. Said to push boundaries and explore the themes of African fantasy, this performance is bound to keep you at the edge of your seat.

    Book a ticket for the workshop, the book fair, the performance, (or all three!) to experience a day of exploration with a curated selection of Afro-futuristic, sci-fi and fantasy books for you to choose from.
