Sheila Cussons is a modern metaphysical poet of note. Her ten volumes of poetry, from Plektrum in 1970 to Membraan in 1984, have won her every major poetry award in Afrikaans, her home language. Sheila Cussons was born of Afrikaans-Irish stock. She was trained in fine arts and is an accomplished graphic artist. A large part of her life was spent in Spain, as wife to a Spanish businessman. Her two sons were born there. A serious burning accident changed the course of her life and poetry. She returned to South Africa in 1982.
