Mongane Wally Serote was born in the tough, vibrant community of Sophiatown. His first works were Yakhalinkomo (1972) for which he was awarded the Ingrid Jonker Prize, followed by Tsetlo (1974), the 60 page epic poem No Baby Must Weep (1976) and Behold Mama, Flowers (1978).
As a Fullbright scholar, he completed a fine arts degree in 1977 at the University of Columbia and since then lived in Gaborone, Botswana where he worked full time for various ANC structures including MK. In 1980, he received the award for the best Southern African writing. His Selected Poems were originally published in 1982.
His novel To Every Birth its Blood was published in 1981. His Selected Poems and The Night Keep Winking were published in 1982. He was the head of the Department of Arts and Culture of the ANC from 1983-86. From 1986 to 1990 he was the cultural attaché for Britain and Europe. A 40 page poem called A Tough Tale was published in 1987 and On the Horizon essays in 1990.
In 1991, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Natal. Since his return to South Africa after an exile of 17 years, he has completed the novel Gods of Our Time. He was awarded the 1993 Noma Award for Third World Express, a 40 page long poem.
