The End of Modernity, by Gianni Vattimo (used)
Gianni Vattimo, one of Italy's foremost contemporary philosophers, makes a forceful and elegant intervention into the discussion of modernism and postmodernism. Pursuing a range of questions central to aesthetics and hermeneutic philosophy, Vattimo positions himself with philosophers such as Gadamer and Rorty in rejecting the possibility of stable foundations for knowledge. But it is Vattimo's concept of pensiero debole–weak or postfoundationalist thought– that allows him to go beyond metaphysics and to release philosophy from the modernist quest for foundations.
Vattimo reexamines the roots of modernism and postmodernism in Nietzsche, Benjamin, and Heidegger. Exploring the links between concepts of nihilism and destiny in nineteenth-century humanism, Vattimo follows these trends in aesthetic and scientific theory from Benjamin to Bloch, Ricoeur, and Kuhn.
