How we’re celebrating the end of March
This Saturday at Bridge: Loud Explosions book launch, Silent Reading club, and a pop-up at August House
This Saturday we’ve got a triple-decker of Bridge events — join us for a cosy morning at our silent reading club, followed by the book launch of Loud Explosions, Silenced Cries. You can also join us for some books and art at the August House pop-up.
Silent Reading Club
Once a month we host our Silent Reading Club. It’s not a book club, it’s a reading club — read what you like, at your own pace. Our reading club may be silent, but that doesn’t mean the city pauses for us — buses come and go, people walk past the windows, you see snapshots of busy lives and get to be a part of the city that reads.
Come a little early to settle in with your drink. Tickets include a beverage from our coffee bar.

Loud Explosions, Silenced Cries: Reflections on the War in Gaza
Date: Saturday, March 28th
Time: 10:30 for 11:00
Location: Bridge Books Barbican, 89 Helen Joseph Street.
Please RSVP to rsvp@jacana.co.za with “Gaza” as the subject line.
This Saturday 28 March, Bridge Books will be hosting contributors of the collection Loud Explosions, Silenced Cries: Reflections on the War in Gaza.
The book brings together poets and essayists from across South Africa to write about the war in Gaza. These are the voices of our scholars, activists, students, and writers who draw the parallels between South Africa’s past and the current plight of the Palestinian people. We’ll have four of the contributors from the book in conversation with us on Saturday.

Women’s Prize for Non-fiction
The shortlist for the Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction was announced this week. While all six books are exciting and incredible feats of writing, our favourite to win this year is Arundhati Roy’s exquisite memoir Mother Mary Comes to Me.
We want to take this opportunity to highlight one of Arundhati Roy’s lesser known works. The Ministry of Utmost Happiness is a devastating, deeply human novel that captures Roy’s fierce political voice.
Bridge Books is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
