Gloria Jean Watkins (born September 25, 1952), better known by her pen name bell hooksis an American author, professor, feminist, and social activist. The name "bell hooks" is borrowed from her maternal great-grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks.

Her first major book (1981) Ain’t I a woman : Black women and feminism established her as a formidable critic and intellectual and set out some of the central themes around culture, gender, race and class that have characterized her work.

She has published more than 30 books and numerous scholarly articles, appeared indocumentary films, and participated in public lectures
