Underground Booksellers Walking Tour

The 3 hour Underground guided tour starts at Bridge Books. Visitors get a 10-15 minute overview of our work with local bookshops, as well as a discussion of the guided tour.

The walk will pass by a religious bookseller, the original Central News Agency building, and James Findlay Collectibles at the Rand Club along the way. The tour stops at street market bookstores, a spaza shop, a Nigerian importer, and the exterior of the newly restored City Library. The library is temporarily closed due to roof repairs.

The tour also describes how books travel through the underground economy and covers the history of bookselling in Johannesburg, from the first black-run library to the days of censorship and book burning, as well as how new current consumers find books in novel ways.
