Dawn Haggie, who was chairman of the African Self Help Association (ASHA) from 1956 to 1990, has written a personal memoir covering the life of the Association from the beginnings.

It brings in the personalities involved and the part played by ASHA in the political and sociological history of the period. These events may one day be forgotten and the purpose of this book is to record some of what happened in Soweto at the height of the apartheid era, and the remarkable achievements of ASHA over the past fifty years.

The title of this history refers to the custom of members of the Association in the early days who used to preface their remarks at meetings with the formal address, "Madam Chair and the house at Large".
