Simunye - One We Are by Ohene Yaw Ampofo-Anti

In this collection of short stories, Ampofo-Anti seems to ask the same set of questions from multiple angles. What does it mean to belong? How should we understand the duality between the individual and the community which is embodied by the African philosophy of ubuntu? How 'new' is the 'new' South Africa? Crossing multiple genres, voices, time periods and narrative styles, Ampofo-Anti explores themes of race ethnicity, the long shadow of apartheid, sexual identity and internalized shame, mental health, queer joy and the question of what it means to be South African. 'Simunye - one we are' is an example of how the personal becomes political and how beneath the existential angst of an individual lies the question of who we are as a nation as well.
