C. B. M. McBurney is a University Lecturer in prehistoric archaeology at Cambridge. He was born in 1914 at Stockbridge, Mass., U.S.A. and educated privately and at King's College, Cambridge, where he held a Research Studentship from 1937 to 1939 and a Fellowship from 1940 to 1953. His Fellowship Dissertation, a comparative study of the later Middle Paleolithic in Europe, was based on analysis of material in various European countries and prepared at the Institut de Paléontologie Humaine, in Paris. It has not yet been published in full, although parts have appeared as papers in archaeological journals. He first became interested in North African prehistory while serving with the R.A.F. in the Western Desert in 1942-3, and has since returned to Libya five times to carry out excavations and surveys.
