VOA News — South African booksellers open up sales in defiance of lockdown

Voice of America covered South African booksellers trading against the grain of the Level 4 lockdown rules, which permitted only books "of educational value" — a category the regulations never defined. Griffin Shea told VOA that if readers were to get what they actually needed, the definition had to stretch to novels, poetry, long-form non-fiction and children's picture books. The piece ran alongside an open letter signed by more than 3,300 South African writers arguing that all books are educational.

"Under this Level 4 restriction, we're supposed to only be selling educational books."
