Bridge Books was founded in 2016 by Griffin Shea, as an inclusive literary art and cultural organisation. In the heart of the city's historic centre, we celebrate Johannesburg's distinctive literary legacy. Our neighbourhood is home to 70 booksellers and the world-renowned collection of 1.5 million books in the City Library.
Our book events welcome everyone from Booker Prize winners to local debut authors from our community
Guided Walking Tours: Underground Booksellers
Want to learn more about our community but don't know where to begin? We host regular walking tours to show you around the neighbourhood, explain our literary history, and introduce you to some of our favourite booksellers.
About the Store:
Our bookstore specialises in African literature and has three floors of books in the Commissioner Street shopfront at the Rand Club. We sell new and preloved books, and our loft contains a children's book section with stories in all 11 of South Africa's official languages.
We host children's book readings in both English and an additional language every Saturday. When the weather permits, we read in a nearby park's amphitheatre.
Do you want to write a story but don't know how? Our writing workshops allow you to work on your writing while being mentored by top authors.
