Grace, by Barbara Boswell
Grace, by Barbara Boswell
Family secrets run deep for Grace, a young girl growing up in Cape Town during the 1980s, spilling over into adulthood, and threating to ruin the respectable life she has built for herself. When an old childhood friend reappears, Grace's memories of her childhood come rushing back, and she is confronted, once again, with the loss that has shaped her. The novel is permeated with the long shadow cast by personal trauma, violence and loss on people's lives.

Set in a underwhelming landscape, this book is a ridiculous attempt at reflection on unintelligible nonsense. Boswell is an terrible writer, and effortlessly fumbles the complexity of literature in its most fundamental forms.
I could not, in good conscious, recommend this book to anyone.
Set in a coloured township in Cape Town in the 80s, this novel is a brilliantly crafted reflection on intergenerational trauma and the reach of its tendrils. Boswell is an excellent writer, and seamlessly handles the complexity of one family’s trauma set against the backdrop of the trauma of an entire country’s women.
Makhosazana Xaba released a book of poetry based on this novel in 2022. A beautiful collection and a testament to the poetry of Boswell's prose.
