On 31 December 2012, a colleague picked a steak knife from a cutlery tray. He yelled, ‘Angi-gay, mina!’ — ‘I’m not gay!’ — and came at me with it.

Siya Khumalo grew up in a Durban township where one fiery sermon could whip up a lynch mob against those considered “different”, in Siya’s case, being gay was “different”. Thus begun Siya’s exploration into sex, politics and religion. His explorations unmasks techniques used by the power-brokers of our time and shows how gay people, in particular, bear the brunt of politicians’ and pastors’ schemes to gain wealth by fleecing the poor and harnessing popular prejudices.

Khumalo tackles DA vs ANC, unpacks corrective rape, and African cultures
and communities and how these things affect gay people. Splicing in political and religious commentary, and using his own life experiences to make sense of these topics, Khumalo promises that a reader brave enough to meet him in the pages of this book, will transcend their notions of “normal”.
