'Buckingham Palace' is a dingy row of five houses in the heart of District Six, a notorious slum area at the foot of Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town. In this lively novel Richard Rive traces this close community through its moments of triumph and despair, its loves, its hatreds - and its bizarre characters.
The school edition of Richard Rive's classic story includes an accessible and stimulating introduction by Robin Malan, as well as notes on the book and points for discussion.

This book is a pan, no idea what's going on and I have to do an essay on a topic relating to the book.
A truly powerful and impactful novel. It was hard not get attached to the characters and their stories.
I read this book 5 years ago and I can still remember it as if it was yesterday. This book tackles the issue of apartheid and the cultural history of the coloured race Buckingham Palace, district six (during apartheid) in the Western Cape. This book exposes the brutality of the Group Areas Act and how people were forced to leave their homes and communities that they have built and be relocated to harsher areas of the country so that the most privileged race at the time can live in luxury. This book is unbearably sad because it hits home. It reminds us of the past and where we came from and how far we have come. This book is one of the best books I have ever read and one of my favourite books. I rate this book a 10/10.
I absolutely loved this book. It was eye-opening, sad and a good book to read. It gave me the opportunity
to learn more about what had happened during apartheid and how it affected the people living in Cape
Town. This was a lively book and reflects the wonderful community spirit that exists in the city.
This book is a book dealing with a painful chapter in history, which may come as a surprise to some. There is no doubt that it is, with characters as colorful as the rainbow nation itself. There is nothing better than a good book and this is a great read with rich characters and a small slice of history thrown in. Rive does not present his readers with a requiem, but with a snapshot of a proud people and a vibrant community that thrived in the depths of apartheid, but instead shares the story of the South African people and their community.
