Coconut, by Kopano Matlwa.
An important rumination on youth in modern-day South Africa, this haunting debut novel tells the story of two extraordinary young women who have grown up black in white suburbs and must now struggle to find their identities.

I remember doing a poster for an English project because of this book. I was not happy with having to read a book during my school holidays but when I started reading it, I could not stop. Coconut is a book based on the lives of two black girls in modern day South Africa. It unravels the concept of identity in a westernised world that still ignores the impact of oppression on black people. This book shows how diverse South African individuals are. You would guess that these two girls are similar in some way, however they each have been influenced differently by their environments and life experiences. This book is truly a roller-coaster as you will fall in and out of love with every character in the book. The main message of the book is the pursuit of success, but it shows how inequality and class obstructs some more than it does others.
