Children of sugarcane is the perfect example of fact made into fiction. The story follows Shanti as she escapes India with the hope of a better future in South Africa, only to be forced into slavery. The story made my heart ache for Shanti, but that only made the importance of family and friendship so much clearer in this book.
The author really brough the characters to life with this novel. As an Indian, this novel really had an impact on me because of the stories I've heard of my family's history.
