At just seventeen, Deneys Reitz rode off to fight with a Boer commando against the British in the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902). Commando is his vivid, firsthand account of guerrilla warfare on horseback — from the early battles in Natal and the fight at Spion Kop to General Smuts's daring raid deep into the Cape Colony. Written in exile years later, it remains one of the great classics of South African war literature: unflinching, often wry, and rich with the hardship and camaraderie of commando life.
