This selection has been drawn from the Romantic and post-Romantic phases of the poetry of France as presented in the revised edition of 'The Oxford Book Of French Verse', which appeared in 1960. From this basis of choice we have made many exclusions; to it we have also made additions. Otherwise our aim has been to broaden the conception of modern French poetry which we think this selection should give, by drawing extensively on the varied lyrical production of the last fifty years.
