A Land Apart explores the literary traditions (Black and White, English and Afrikaans) of South Africa as they engage with the reality of life there today.

André Brink and J.M. Coetzee, two of South Africa's most distinguished writers, have made a selection that shows the literary re-working of the South African crisis in an anthology that offers a unique insight into the cultural preoccupations of a fragmented society. 

A Land Apart is important in another respect too. The bias of the selection has been towards the 'generation of 1976’– after the Soweto uprising. Here are some of South Africa's voices speaking for the first time to an international audience.
