The story is about a young boy, Bennie, who lives in Yeoville with his mother. Their lives improve when Bennie's mother buys a pink beetle. But when the Beetle is stolen by Freddie, they go back to having to walk everywhere. Bennie saves the day when he spots the beetle parked in the street. He and his mother manage to steal it back. But things do not end there. Freddie, who recognizes Bennie and his mother when they stole the Beetle back, turns his life around. Once e has found a job, he goes to Bennie and his mother's apartment and tries to make friends with them.

The book is brightly and quickly illustrated by well-known artist and mosaicist, Drew Lindsay.
