Herman Charles Bosman will be remembered as one of South Africa's foremost short story writers, a writer of superb skill in characterisation, narration and command of language. His first collection of short stories, Mafikeng Road, has already assumed the stature of a South African classic and is, together with the posthumous collection, Unto Dust, cherished by all admirers of great humorous writing. Of these stories, most of which are narrated by old Boer from Marico District, who is really the embodiment of sly ambiguity.
This volume includes four hitherto unpublished Shalk Lourens stories as well as a selection from the above two highly praised collections. It also contains extracts from Cold Stone Jug, Bosman's witty and often poignant account of life in a South African prison in the twenties, and a number of his essays from A Cask of Jerepigo.
