Capital and Labour: Studies in the Capitalist Labour Process

To understand modern industrial society, one must understand the capitalist labour process. This reader is intended to bridge the gap between traditional industrial sociology and Marxist thinking, and to introduce readers both to Marx's ideas and to the important and controversial work on the labour process that has emerged i recent years.

The reader begins with a selection of Marx's own writings on the labour process, and then moves on to an examination of forced and free labour. Next the reproduction off the labour force, through the family, education and work, is examined. Theo Nichols then looks at management, and its relationship to capital and labour. Finally he surveys the control of labour power. 

This collection, with its stated aim of demystifying Marxist terminology and Marxist ideas, should prove invaluable to students of sociology, politics and industrial relations. As well as half a dozen original contributions, the book includes material from Marx, Mandel, Braverman  and many others.
