Conflict between church and state is a perennial feature of church history. This conflict is heightened when the state exercises power in areas which the church considers to be its domain; it is stilled when the church is effectively silenced by state authorities or when the church becomes a complaint instrument of the state.
This volume of eleven essays examines the crucila areas of church-state conflict in South Africa- Catholic versus Calvinist social teaching, Catholic education, the different practices and expectations of black and white lay people, the tension sbetween white and black priests- and reveals some of their consequences. The texts of all the statements made by the Catholic bishops of South Africa on church-state relations since the coming of apartheid form a valuable appendix to the book.
Contributions include Archbishop Denis Hurley, Bishop Mandlenkosi Zwane, Professor John de Gruchy, Fr Albert Nolan, and (looking in form outside) Fr Adrain Hastings.
