The Irish Dramatic Movement of the earlier part of the last century produced some of the finest plays in the language. Yeats's The Countess tells of two merchants who traffic men's souls, and of how the Countess sells her own rather than see her people starve. Synge's masterpiece, The Playboy of the Western World, is the story of a peasant boy who thinks he has killed his father and so becomes a hero until his murdered father reappears. O'Casey's Cock-a-doodle Dandy, which the author considers his best play, is a satire directed against superstition, avarice, and priestly authority
