In 1926 Herman Charles Bosman, one of South Africa's most popular short story writers, was condemned to death after a catastrophic incident in which his stepbrother was killed. On the judge's recommendation his sentence was commuted to four years with hard labour. Cold Stone Jug is Bosman's account of his prison experiences – never bitter, unfailing in its humour, and with unmistakable high courage.

Cold Stone Jug is part of a series of eight Herman Charles Bosman titles reissued in a uniform edition by Human & Rousseau. The other titles are Unto Dust, Jurie Steyn's Post Office, Mafeking Road, A Cask of Jerepigo, Willemsdorp, A Bekkersdal Marathon and Jacaranda in the Night.
