The political changes announced by F W De Klerk on 2 February 1990 brought into focus new possibilities for social transformation in South Africa and an immediate need to establish policies to effect the end of the apartheid system in every sphere of social, political, and economic life. Education in a Future South Africa explores some of the key problems posed by the transformation process in education whilst simultaneously highlighting the choices open to democratic movements.

This collection of essays draws on research conducted by the Research on Education in South Africa (Resa) project and contains contributions from eminent South African educationalists active in the democratic movement. It will stimulate debate and discussion among activists in the education struggle and will be an invaluable resource for NEPI and the NECC. It will also be essential reading for academics, students and all those with an interest in the future of education in a democratic South Africa.
