Pilgrimage to Dias Cross: A Narrative poem (used)
Guy Butler
In his Prologue, Guy Butler writes: "Angered by the political exploitation of differences between the peoples of his country, the ageing speaker makes an imaginary pilgrimage to a favourite spot: Kwaai Hoek, or False Islande, the headland off the southern African coast where Dias raised a cross five centuries ago. On his way he is joined by historical ghost who haunt the immediate hinterland. Between sunset and midnight the pilgrims cross the no-man's-land of sand dunes which connects the headlands to Africa. They make a fire from flotsam, and keep vigil there, until the spirit of Dias appears. His presence enables them to affirm their common humanity and to share their songs, which transcend their divisive histories."
Guy Butler, one of South Africa's best known and most respected poets, is joined by the artist Cecil Skotnes in a powerful work that represents both at the height of their mature creativity.
