"Evocative, colourful, joyful — and rightly proud" - Edwin Cameron
Africa's first gay and lesbian Pride march took place in Johannesburg in 1990.
Fewer than a thousand people attended; in the sixteen years since then, it has grown dramatically and now attracts tens of thousands of participants from all over the world.
Pride has evolved from a protest march to a celebratory parade, with festivals and carnivals added to the package (never mind the after-parties). It has moved from downtown Johannesburg to its northern suburbs and back, and has inspired similar events elsewhere.
The primary demands of 1990 were met: gay rights were intrenched in the new South African Constitution. Today, ride fights for the extension of those rights into all aspects of law, and celebrates lesbian and gay visibility.
This book documents the history of Pride in image and text, drawing on the Gay and Lesbian Archives and the personal testimonies of individuals who describe the role Pride in their lives. It celebrates an extraordinary achievement in the struggle for human rights in South Africa and on the continent.
