Sandton: The making of a town, by Jane Carruthers

Twenty-five years ago Sandton was established and here, for the first time, the many strands of history which led to the creation of the town on 1 July 1969 are brought together. Modern-day Sandton is acclaimed for its exceptional residential and urban growth and for its gracious lifestyle, but few people are aware of the circumstances under which the municipality came into being. From precolonial and early white settlers through to the determined residents who fought tenaciously for the right to govern their own local affairs, this fascinating book traces the story of Sandton.

The author: Dr Jane Carruthers is an internationally recognised historian specialising in urban and environmental history. Her publications on Sandton, Randburg, Cape Town and the Kruger National Park have been widely acclaimed. She is also well known for her work on the 19th century artists Melton Prior and Thomas Baines. Jane, a resident of Sandton, has lived almost all her life in Bryanston. She is based at the University of South Africa.

The illustrator: Born in England, Duncan Butchart is a freelance illustrator, photograher and graphic designer, and he is prominent in ornithological and wildlife conservation circles. His sensitive illustrations - many taken from contemporary photographs of Sandton -enhance the value and appeal of this book.
