In the Heart of the Country, by J. M. Coetzee

On a remote farm in colonial South Africa, a lonely sheep farmer takes a Black concubine, and his embittered, unmarried daughter Magda is humiliated. The affair upsets the uneasy balance between master and servant, and as Magda dreams of violent revenge, the line between what happens and what she imagines begins to dissolve. J. M. Coetzee's early novel is an intense portrait of a woman's obsession against an indifferent landscape.
