Set in apartheid-era South Africa, this play centres on three people navigating suspicion and fear under state surveillance: Piet Bezuidenhout, an Afrikaner suspected by his old comrades of informing to the security police; his wife Gladys, whose mental health has unravelled since police ransacked and read her private diaries; and Steve Daniels, a mixed-race political activist preparing to leave the country for good on an exit permit. Over one evening the three confront how political fear and mistrust have corroded their marriage and friendship. Athol Fugard's drama is regarded as one of his most personal explorations of trust and betrayal under apartheid.
