An illustrated history and portrait of Venice by George Bull, the British writer and translator best known for his Penguin Classics translations of Machiavelli's The Prince, Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier and Vasari's Lives of the Artists. He brings that deep knowledge of Renaissance Italy to the city the Venetians themselves called the most triumphant.
This is the Folio Society edition of 1981, made with the Folio's usual care: set in Bembo, printed on Fineblade cartridge paper by W & J Mackay of Chatham, and bound in cloth blocked with a fifteenth-century Venetian design by the printer Erhard Ratdolt.
