Lilian Ngoyi: A Life, by Martha Evans

A researched biography of Lilian Ngoyi, one of the leaders of South Africa's liberation struggle. Martha Evans follows her rise from poverty in a Pretoria location, through widowhood, the Garment Workers' Union and the Federation of South African Women, to organising the 1956 Women's March and becoming the first woman on the ANC's National Executive Committee. The book also covers her arrest, the Treason Trial, solitary confinement and banning, and draws on letters, speeches and archives.

Martha Evans is an associate professor at the University of Cape Town's Centre for Film and Media Studies. Her earlier books deal with the end of apartheid on television and with South African political speeches.
