In 1994, aged 16, Emmanuel Taban fled Sudan after government forces tortured him on suspicion of spying for the rebels. Over the next eighteen months, mostly by bus and on foot, he made his way through Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe to Johannesburg. In South Africa he finished school, qualified as a doctor and became a pulmonologist, later pioneering the use of therapeutic bronchoscopies to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients. Written with Andrew Crofts, this is the story of an extraordinary journey and a refusal to give up.
