In No Uncertain Terms is Helen Suzman's memoir of her 36 years in South Africa's parliament, where for much of the apartheid era she was the sole representative of the Progressive Party. She recalls her family background, teaching economic history at Wits in the 1940s, when she first became aware of the plight of black South Africans, and her first election in 1953, and describes how she used her seat to expose detention and forced removals despite anti-Semitic attacks from apartheid's supporters. Among the figures she portrays are P. W. Botha and Nelson Mandela, then in prison, and she sets out her stance against sanctions, stressing economic growth as the answer to unemployment and housing shortages.
Helen Suzman (1917–2009), born in Germiston, was a parliamentarian and human rights activist. She received the UN Human Rights Award in 1978 and was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
