A Gesture of Belonging collects the letters Bessie Head wrote to Randolph Vigne, her close friend and confidant, over more than a decade, from 1965 to 1979. Head met Vigne during her Cape Town years, and wrote to him from Serowe, Botswana, where she lived as a political refugee and a single mother. Edited by Vigne, the letters uncover the traumas, insecurities and creative life of one of Africa's celebrated writers.

Bessie Head is one of Africa's celebrated writers, known for novels such as When Rain Clouds Gather (1968); she also wrote short stories and essays. Randolph Vigne was a South African anti-apartheid activist, influential in the Liberal Party of South Africa.

SA Writers, London, 1991 (with Heinemann, Portsmouth, NH). 229 pages. Includes index. ISBN 9781872086040.
