An Instant in the Wind, by André Brink

Set in the Cape in 1751, this novel follows the relationship that develops between a white woman and an enslaved Black man after she is left stranded in the wilderness, moving from initial conflict toward a deep exchange about love, identity and freedom across the racial divide. Brink, a South African novelist whose earlier novel Looking on Darkness had been banned by the apartheid government, initially had this book distributed only by private subscription. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
