The four volumes in series I and II of the AFRICAN HANDBOOK OF BIRDS are recognised as the standard work on the subject. The area covered by Series I includes Sudan, Abyssinia and Eritrea, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanganyika, the Zanzibar Islands, the eastern part of Nyasaland and Mozambique north of Zambesi River. Volume I describes the families Ostriches to Pittas, and includes the majority of the larger birds of the Eastern and North Eastern areas, giving an introduction to each family.
