Lars Persson, a Swedish ethnologist, writer and freelance film-maker was given an assignment by Swedish television in 1974: to go to South Africa and report his impressions of the country on film. But instead of acquiescing in the time honoured Swedish journalistic tradition of attacking the South African 'racists' Person's first move, after reaching South Africa, was to insist on going to the Caprivi Strip in South West Africa to make an independent investigation of a sensational documentary on that territory which TV 2, his own employers, had, themselves, faked!

Although they succeeded in suppressing his films TV 2 could not silence Lars Person. One year after his return to Sweden his book Abantu was published to a barrage of Press condemnation. Borders of Decency is the English version of this book updated to encompass happenings in Southern Africa since the Persson visit.

His journey is reported with a keen eye for the natural beauty of the country and an appreciation of its wild life - both plant and animal Above all, Persson, as a trained ethnologist, has observed and reported on the way of life of some of South Africa's many people, and the imminent extinction of some of their cultures.
