This issue is part of Contrast, the pioneering South African literary quarterly founded in 1960 by writer and editor Jack Cope, who ran it for two decades to showcase the best new South African poetry, prose, reviews and interviews. Cope believed the magazine should "succeed on its own merits," and it helped launch the careers of numerous South African writers before later evolving into New Contrast.
