The setting is downtown Joburg. Ethne, a middle-aged, overweight poetess, adopts a bloodhound named Rabinowitz as a remedy for menopausal loneliness. When she is confronted by the unexpected arrival of the charismatic, mysterious Mortimer, she is appalled. But Mortimer is ill, and is taken in by Derek, Ethne's neighbour, himself a very uncertain passenger on life's journey. Mortimer weaves his spells for the three of them, and their tales become entangled with that of homophobic, beer-swilling landlord Percy and his chain-smoking mother Olive, not to mention Derek's ghastly mother and the womanising preacher, Greg.
