E. M. Forster's memoir recounts his two stays in India, in 1912–13 and 1921, when he served as private secretary to Tukojirao III, the young Maharajah of Dewas Senior. Taking its title from a hilltop temple to the goddess Devi, the book paints an intimate, affectionate portrait of a small princely court and its ruler, and of Forster's own place within it as an outsider. Published in 1953, it is a nonfiction companion piece to his novel A Passage to India.
