Underground Booksellers Walking Tour

We run Bridge Books and the African Book Trust. We're based in an underground literary hub, surrounded by 70 booksellers. Our work has been featured in The New York Times and, BBC. We focus on African literature and changing perceptions of South African reading habits. We partner with the Johannesburg Development Agency to rebrand as the Literary District.

This is an easy walk that leaves from the Bridge Books at 89 Cnr. Rissik & Hellen Joseph. Then we explore Joburg's historic district.

We'll visit the Joubert Street market, home to many of the 70-plus booksellers in the CBD, and De Strong Tower, importers of Nigerian religious books. There are also spaza shops, religious shops, sidewalk vendors and fashion boutiques -- which all sell books too.

The tour starts at 10 am. Uber/Bolt/ride-hailing is the best way to get to us.

Please wear walking shoes, and carry some small cash in case you want to buy from one of the vendors.
