By (author): Fred Halliday. Fred Halliday's 1979 study analyses the conditions leading up to Iran's 1978–79 revolution, arguing that the Shah's regime pursued genuine reforms — land redistribution, industrialisation — that were nonetheless undermined by political repression and rising inflation, producing widespread insecurity even as living standards rose for some. Halliday rejects both the Shah's claims of an imminent economic miracle and the simple leftist view that development under the Shah was pure sham, situating Iran's underdevelopment in a more complex picture than imperialism alone.
