In this 1993 historical novel by Cornish saga writer E.V. Thompson, Welsh governess Dewi Morgan makes the long sea voyage to Pentuan to take up a post at Polrudden Manor, only to find on arrival that the manor's owner, Nathan Jago, intends instead to hire a local girl to educate his son Beville — leaving her long journey seemingly for nothing, and setting up a clash between her expectations and the reality she finds.
