Once at KwaFubesi is a children's novel first published by Ravan Press in 1981, one of eleven children's books Poland wrote before she turned to adult fiction. It received an honourable mention at the Percy Fitzpatrick Awards in 1981. Poland's writing draws on her anthropological background and engagement with African landscapes and oral tradition, and the book's illustrations were provided by noted South African wildlife artist Leigh Voigt.
