One of two limited edition prints honouring the courage of those who protested against apartheid.
Printed in a limited edition of just 50, this Risograph print boldly celebrates the courage, daring and defiance of the protestors who peacefully gathered in central Cape Town's Greenmarket Square on 2 September 1989. A cannon atop a police vehicle sprayed hundreds of them with purple dye. Not long after the protest, graffiti appeared on the dye-stained walls of the Old Town House, proclaiming The Purple Shall Govern! This was a playful allusion to the Freedom Charter’s insistence that “The people shall govern”. A little over four years later, South Africa would hold its first fully democratic and non-segregated elections.
